Draft Setup of meeting 29 September 2010.

09:00   ExCom meeting, first part

10:45   Coffee break

11:00   Seminar "A Macro-Regional Strategy for the North Sea Region" -
linked to the draft agenda for the ExCom meeting.

The seminar is in three sessions:

  1. The first session - Does a "macro-region" make sense? - will have a number of talented academic speakers from a variety of disciplines including political economy, economic geography and spatial planning.
  2. The second session - Existing cooperation in the North Sea - will have a number of speakers who will be able to share their story of existing cooperation on a North Sea basis.
  3. The third session - How can we enhance the cooperation in the North Sea? - will be a panel discussion made up of political speakers and a chance for the audience to explore the concept of a North Sea macro-region in practice rather than just theory.

The NSC President Gunn Marit Helgesen is one of the two candidates as the new CPMR President.

The new CPMR President will be elected at the Political Bureau meeting 30 September, during the General Assembly in Aberdeen.

President Helgesen states; "The central role CPMR plays towards major stakeholders in the European arena is a result of the excellent work which CPMR's Political Bureau lead by President Martini, has accomplished together with the secretariat in Rennes. As President of the CPMR, I will do my very best to continue to strengthen the CPMR's position as an organization in the European arena."

As President of the CPMR Gunn Marit Helgesen aims are;

  • to further strengthen CPMR's position as the main representative for the Maritime Regions in Europe and to continue the work that has been established over the years,
  • to further develop the cooperation within the Presidential cabinet, between the President and the Vice-Presidents,
  • to give the Vice-Presidents their own portfolios, e.g. EU Affairs to 1. Vice-President
  • to include the Presidents for the geographic commissions more into the Presidential cabinet's development work and to give them new tasks,
  • to follow up the conclusions from the members survey (Jean Didier Harche et.al - the working groups)
  • to ensure that the good cooperation between the President and the secretariat in Rennes and Brussels is continued.
  • to ensure that CPMR's central political areas are emphasized for ex. Territorial Cohesion and Maritime Policy.

On Friday 18 June 2010 North Sea Commission held it's Annual Business Meeting and the meeting unanimously agreed on a statement;

  • President Gunn Marit Helgesen was reelected for two new years, until June 2012.
  • The ABM adopted the Resolution "The Challenge of Mainstreaming Energy Efficient Buildings in the North Sea Region and Significance of Existing Building Stock".  You find the resolution here.

Statement from General Assembly 2010

Statement on the prevention of oil spills in the North Sea Region.

The General Assembly of the North Sea Commission, held in Stavanger (Norway) on 18 June 2010, expressed their real concerns in respect of the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The General Assembly urges all governments to urgently investigate the risks which exist in the North Sea.

The North Sea is of fundamental importance to the lives of its inhabitants and the economies of all the countries around the North Sea.


North Sea Region 2020

The timetable for North Sea Region 2020 activities in 2010 are as follows;

  • 17 - 18 March; Stakeholder Conference in Newcastle supported by UK Government and NSC. External link to presentations and Final report
  • 13 April; "Europe's macro-region: Integration through territorial co-operation". Hosted by the CoR in Brussels. Info and Presentations.
  • 20 May; "Working together to Manage the Resources of the North Sea and Channel, Workshop in Oviedo during Maritime Day. More info here and report NSC seminar.
